Laughing!

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

Isabel started laughing out loud Thursday. It was a fish that did it, part of the Fisher Price Aquarium series. Since the first laugh, she has laughed out loud at anything that strikes her as funny, like funny faces by her sister or mother. She even laughed out loud to Baby Einstein. Another tv addict is born! Kentucky Bill to Protect Breastfeeding in Public

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

If Sen. Tom Buford, R-Nicholasville, of Kentucky, has his way, Kentucky will join the ranks of the socially advanced states in our great nation who will protect a mother's right to breastfeed her children in public! I say lead the way, Kentucky! I wholeheartedly support a woman's right to breastfeed, and consider myself lucky to reside in a state that already protects that right, New York.

Nursing Strike!

Wednesday, February 1st, 2006

Late last week, Kate suddenly decided she didn't want to nurse anymore. Everytime she would latch on, a minute later she was screaming and crying and refusing to nurse anymore. Finally I started giving her bottles, but was perplexed by this sudden change in temperment. She had taken all of her medication (she's on Zantac for reflux), and she had never behaved this way before. It seemed the more I tried to breastfeed, the more she resisted, so I finally gave in. The weird thing was she nursed at night just fine ... something was definitely up.

Playtex Embrace Accessories and Service (Updated)

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

We love our Playtex Embrace, but because of the "Medela Mafia," Playtex doesn't always have the best distribution in stores, so getting spare parts and enough gear takes a little work. Here's how we went about it.

We've been using the disposable (recyclable) bottle liners, instead of pumping directly into a bottle or bag, it seems more sterile, less wasteful of milk, and less messy. The Embrace only comes with enough collars for the disposable liners to let us store a couple of bottles in the fridge. We even bought the "Playtex Premium Nurser Gift Starter Set" with 4 bottles, collars, and nipples and still found ourselves running out of collars.

The (only) Five Reasons Our Baby Fusses

Thursday, January 5th, 2006

My husband and I have come up with a list of the five reasons Kate fusses. Whenever she fusses, something on this list is usually wrong:

  • She has been attacked by the Hungries (a vicious group hell-bent on convincing her we really want her to starve. They get her all agitated and hysterical.)
  • She needs to be burped or is having reflux issues.
  • Her diaper needs to be changed.
  • She is tired or overstimulated. Start the sleepy routine.
  • Sometimes she just wants to be held. Don't we all?

It is a rare occassion that something on this list doesn't do the trick. We put this list together within the first couple of weeks when she came home, and other than adding "reflux" and "overstimulated", it's stayed the same. While we might forget what's on the list, she never does, and when we finally run through all five, it's inevitably done the trick.
