Medications Allowed During Pregnancy
January 1st, 2006 by Jenn
I'm frequently asked this question, so I thought I would post the meds my doctor said I could take when I was pregnant.
For Digestive Upsets
- Antacids for acid indigestion or heartburn (Tums, Rolaids, Mylanta, Maalox)
- Simethicone for gas pains (Gas-X, Mylicon, Phazyme)
- For patients on low salt diets, Riopan
For Cough or Colds
- Guaifenesin cold preparations (Robitussin)
- Guaifenesin plus dextromethorphan (Robitussin DM, Benylin Expectorant, Nyquil, Vicks Cough Syrup)
- Cough Drops
- Vick's Vaporub
For Pain Relief, Headache or Fever
- Acetominophen (Tylenol, Anacin-3)
For Allergy Relief
- Chlorpheniramine antihistamine alone (ChlorTrimeton Allergy Tablets)
- Avoid decongestant sprays, as they can damage nasal passages if used frequently
For Constipation, Diarrhea and Hemorrhoids
- Bulking agents can be used regularly (metamucil, citrucel)
- Drink plenty of water and eat fruits, vegetables, and bran foods
- Laxatives can be used occasionally (Kaopectate, Donnagel)
- Tucks, Preparation H or Anusol for hemorrhoids
- Pepto-Bismol should be avoided, as it contains aspirin
For Insomnia
- Diphenhydramine (Benedryl, Nytol, Sominnex-2)
