Putting Herself to Sleep!

Kate has had two major milestones this week. First, she rolled over on her own, from tummy to back, into a toy and bopping her head quite hard. Poor thing. The milestone I'm most excited about, though, is that she put herself to sleep tonight.
Now granted, she was exhausted. The phone rang after she had been asleep only an hour, and it work her up for two hours. She couldn't get back to sleep and wanted to play. We played and played and I got tired. It was 10 pm and she still hadn't fallen asleep again. My plan was to take my contacts out and then snuggle her to sleep, a proven effective treatment for her.
I placed her in the co-sleeper, and turned on her Fisher Price Flutterbye Dream toy, which has little birds that move, a movie on the ceiling, and lullaby music. I thought it would distract her long enough for me to take my contacts out.
When I returned, she was quietly watching the birds and not fussing at all, so I decided to go into the office and post. Soon I heard the flutterbye dreams turn off, and no subsequent fuss from Kate. I sneaked in to the room to discover that wow, she was asleep. This is the first time she has gone to sleep without being held, rocked in a swing, or strolled around NYC. It's a miracle. The flutterbye dreams is a great device!

Jennifer, when kate has a real poup, and later when she tells you she needs to go. That's a milestone. I hate to say but my milestones are 17 and 12. Ben looks at colleges next year, and Rachel competed successfully on the women's swim team as a 7th grader.
One last bit of advice: keep the TV off, and never
put Kate back to sleep watching the TV.

Hmmm, not sure where that tv comment comes from. The flutterbye dreams is more like a lullabye machine than a television (there is no tv feature on it). The "movie" feature is a ceiling light show of nature scenes - sorry if that was unclear. I think it's perfectly appropriate for a baby, and it serves its purpose.
Congratulations on having older children. Since Kate is only 5 months old, we celebrate each milestone, no matter how small.
