Nothing is more important to young parents than the validation they get from parenting books telling them they're doing the right thing. While some of our friends of successfully "Ferber-ized" their kids, by letting them cry for progressively longer periods of time, our status as "tofu-hating hippies" (THH) meant that stories of babies crying until they vomited meant we'd never be able to handle it. Kate has the uncanny ability to scream herself blotchy in about 40 seconds, I'm pretty sure we're afraid she'd grow tentacles if we let her scream for more than a minutes.

Now that she is almost ten months old, we've tried to change up the program a little bit without going too far from our baby-snuggling preferences. She sleeps in her crib from around 7 to around midnight, if we can keep her going at that point (either a bottle or a binky), she'll stay there until 2:30 usually, but on occasion as late as 4 or 5. We've had good days where she's slept until 5 without night-feeding, but they're pretty rare, more often at 2'ish she'll need a top off. Whether that means just enough to go another hour, or the rest of the night seems random at this point, but the campaign has begun.

After that comes stopping her from spinning around like a bottle cap in bed, whapping us awake when she's bored, and then ... eventually .. the de-binky-fication.

It goes without saying that Dr. Ferber wouldn't approve. Slate has a couple of good articles on baby sleep today, one on the torch-passing from Spock to Ferber in the mid '80s, and another on Emily Bazelon's inconsistent baby sleeptime discipline and review of Ferber's revised (softened) edition:

If anything, the past 20 years of counseling sleep-addled families has made Ferber all the more exasperated with parents who don't set firm rules. A new chapter, "The Problem of Limit Setting," expressly aims to stiffen the parental spine. I savored its hectoring tone and imagined how it could save me from my younger son—or, as Ferber would have it, save my son from me.
