We had our big initial anatomy scan today, and got really great news! Not only does the baby appear to be healthy and growing normally, but we also received good news on our First Trimester Screening!
Initially, before any screening was done, my chances of having a baby with down syndrome was 1 in 179 due to my "advanced maternal age" of 37. My risk of having a child with Trisomy 18/13 was 1 in 329. Now that they have performed the blood test and the nuchal translucency, they have adjusted my risk, and once again it seems I have the genes of a 20 year old. The baby's risk for down syndrome is now 1 in 3,561 and the risk of trisomy 18/13 is 1 in 6,497. I'll take those odds to Vegas any day. Unless anything comes up in our AFP test, it appears we'll be skipping the amnio (phew! sigh of relief!).
The baby weighs about 4 ounces now and everything measures normal for growth. Furthermore, NO PLACENTA PREVIA! THANK GOD! I am so relieved, I can't imagine going through another high risk delivery.
Now for the news you've all been waiting for...it appears boysenberry is...a girl???? That's right, both the ultrasound tech and the doctor concurred, and the doctor pulled up the between the legs shot and pointed out the labia and the clitoris, so it seems rather likely. If it's a boy, he'll be disappointed. Joel is going to be so outnumbered. As Joel said, it will be cheaper in the short term since we are fully invested in pink already, but more expensive in the long term to have two girls!
Overall, we couldn't have wished for anything better. We have a happy healthy baby who appears to be growing and thriving. Our next appointment is in 3 weeks, and then a fetal echocardiogram (due to my heart defect, not anything they saw in the baby) in 5 weeks. We're having a second anatomy scan in 6 weeks.
As for me, I'm feeling well, although a tad bit nauseated today. I'm really tired all the time, and getting out of breath going up and down stairs again. It's amazing how quickly that sets in. I've gained a paltry 5 pounds so far, officially since I was weighed today. I think that might be a little less than with Kate, but I don't tend to gain much weight during pregnancy. Turns out I become the world's pickiest eater and don't want to eat anything, rather than diving in and eating myself out of house and home. I suppose that's a good thing because who wants to lose more weight in the end? I was within the normal range with Kate (19 pounds total), and I expect I will be with this one too.
Speaking of Kate, she is miserable today with an eye infection. She keeps telling me "Eyes hurt." Poor thing. She had a slight fever today and yesterday, and I've been putting some antibiotic drops in her eyes which seem to be helping. Hopefully by tomorrow she'll be better, but I'll probably have to keep her home from her French class. She'll be so disappointed!
