Bloomies Disappoints

Last week I decided to shop at Bloomingdales on the Upper East Side. It was one of my first shopping trips with two. All was well for the first hour. The girls fell asleep on the subway, and continued to sleep for another hour. Suddenly, all hell broke loose. Isabel decided she needed nursing NOW. She woke her sister up screaming, who immediately screamed "potty potty!" It was a dilemma. If I nursed Isabel, Kate would have an accident, but if I took Kate to the potty, Isabel would continue to scream until it was her turn.
Now I don't often shop at Bloomingdales, but a friend gave me a great coupon that I thought would make it worth my while. I was pleasantly surprised at how accommodating the sales people were to my need to feed the baby. They allowed me to nurse her in the dressing rooms without hesitation, and no stern warning not to leave dirty diapers in there like I got at Macys when I went through this with Kate. (as if...gross!) What I was not prepared for was the rudeness of the customers. I have to say that one "old lady," as she is now known in our house, stunned me speechless, which is hard to do. Back to the story...I decided to take Kate to the potty to maintain her dignity and positively reinforce the success we have had so far, and let Isabel wait ten minutes for her turn. As we were walking into the ladies room, the "old lady" turned to Kate, who was quietly and obediently following me about three steps behind into the bathroom, and yelled, "BE QUIET!" At first I didn't think she could be talking to Kate, but then I realized as I turned around to assess the situation that she was yelling at my totally innocent two year old! Then she realized it was Isabel with the healthy set of lungs, and instead of apologizing to Kate, said, "Oh, it's the baby." Several patrons stood as stunned as I was, and I was beyond able to respond because it was so unexpected and out of the blue. A woman who works in the restroom there stopped me and let me use the other unopened side of the restroom to get away from the crazy old lady, and she seemed quite sympathetic to my plight.
As if that weren't enough, when I finished with Kate, I moved to the lounge to nurse Isabel. When she finished, I was burping her and she was still acting fussy. She was about 20 minutes away from a dose of Tylenol, which she was taking to ward off a fever from her vaccines the day before. A second crazy old lady then got my attention and told me that I needed to be giving that baby formula, that she wasn't getting enough to eat. I explained that she was fussy due to vaccines, not an empty tummy, but this did not deter the advice from nowhere. She continued, explaining that some women do not make enough milk for the babies and that you should always supplement with formula. I said we weren't doing that, we were strictly breastfeeding. Yet she continued. Finally I told her that we went to the pediatrician the day before and she said Isabel was doing well and was healthy. Why did I feel I had to explain myself to some crazy person at Bloomies? And WTF is wrong with the people who shop there? Where did they come from? Why are they cranky and in my business? And why am I defending myself against them? Needless to say, that was all I could take and we left, coupon, sadly, unspent.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
