Sleeping Through the Night!

For the past three weeks or so, our daughter has been sleeping through the night like a champ, so I thought I should share my sleep solution. She is 14 months old, and previously had been waking up every three hours or so since birth. Even when she stopped breastfeeding at 7 months, she still wanted her bottle in the middle of the night, and it was always hunger. We were also cosleeping, and started putting her in her own room at 13 months.

We were planning to start this a little sooner, but we moved around all summer and I didn't want to force her to sleep alone, give up her bottle, and soothe herself back to sleep while we were moving and subletting for two months, so I waited until we had our own place and a designated room for her. An attachment parent at heart, I can't let my child cry it out, so this is what I did to get my sleep and my sanity back.

I bought the No Cry Sleep Solution and read it cover to cover. Some it the ideas I incorporated into my own sleep solution, and some I did not. The first thing I did was establish a bedtime and a routine. I have always hated routine, but it turns out my child loves it, so if it gets some sleep for us I can't deny her the pleasure. I feed her dinner, give her a bath, put pjs on, read two books, turn on lullabies and then turn off the light, in that order, every night. Then I give her a bottle to her lullabies, a binky when she is finished, and rock her to sleep. Once asleep, but barely asleep, I put her in her crib, place a small blanket on her, raise the crib side, and leave with the door mostly closed.

The first few nights were hard for her. She woke up for her bottle at midnight, and I was so determined and stubborn that I decided it was worth sacrificing a few nights of sleep for the greater sleep good. Rather than give her a bottle and bring her to bed with us, my previous fallback, I rocked her back to sleep and put her back in her crib. Then she woke up at 3, and I did the same thing all over again. At midnight she went right back to sleep, and I thought the plan was off to a great start. At three, however, she was now 7 hours into a bottle-less night and couldn't be more unhappy. She cried, she fussed, she tried to play, but I rocked and rocked. By five she was back to sleep (yes, two hours), but she was in her crib and sleeping soundly. I went back to sleep, but after two hours of being up, I didn't quite fall back asleep before 5:45 when she woke up again. This time her dad took over, and he rocked her for about 45 minutes before we decided to get her a bottle. We were hoping that would mean more sleep, but no, that was not to be had that night.

We decided on a rule that nobody has breakfast before 7 am, and on the second night we essentially did the same routine but didn't feed her until 7 am. She woke up a little later, at midnight and then 3:30, and was up at 5:45 for the day. The third night I was desperate, and a little surprised that she didn't wake up at midnight as usual. When I woke up at 7 am the next morning and realized I hadn't fed her or rocked her at all that night, I rushed down the stairs to her room to see if she was ok. She was fine, sleeping soundly, but woke up to my entering her room!

After that night, for a couple of weeks she woke up around 3 am some days but not all, then after a couple of weeks she started sleeping solidly through the night without waking up. During the couple of weeks, I came to her rescue when she cried, but I gave her a minute or so to see if she would soothe herself back to sleep. If she did more than a chirp or really cried like she was upset, I would come to her aid, but when she just made a few noises, I let her find her own binky and get herself back to sleep. Now she hardly makes a peep.

That was it. Three weeks and my baby, who previously showed no inclination that she should sleep through the night, especially if it meant no bottle, now sleeps soundly and solidly. She is better rested, in a better mood, and happier now because of it. While it takes a bit of a sacrifice for a couple of unscheduled spontaneous people to give in and get her in bed by 8 or 9 pm, it seems to be worth it just so I can sleep again. Ultimately, I think that makes me a better parent!
