Sentences and More!

March 13th, 2007 by Jennifer

Wow. Some days it seems like Kate jumps ahead by a month, just growing by intellectual leaps and bounds in mere hours. Today was one of those days. She started out learning quite a few words yesterday and this morning, like cook, hug, ogle (it's in a book "O, Owlflies Ogle"), read, helping, tricycle, pedals and who.

We went to French class this afternoon, and because of my doctor's appointment, we missed her class and attended the 2.5-4 year old class. It was like I had been holding her back. Suddenly, without warning, she knew every move in every song, she hummed along, and participated like she completely understood the language. We did "If you're happy and you know it..." in French, and she correctly tapped her head, clapped her hands, stomped her feet and turned around. In a bedtime song, the kids take scarves and pretend they are blankets and sprawl out on the floor like they are sleeping. Kate did it right along with them, although she had never heard the song or heard the word for fatigue in French. I was shocked! Maybe it was because this class had older kids who knew how to follow along, and her class doesn't, so she feels intimidated to be the only one trying? I don't know, but I was just amazed.

Then, a couple of hours later, we went to pick up my prescription, and while we were waiting, she pointed to the phone and said, "Mommy call daddy." Not a minute later, we ran into a friend, and I introduced him to Kate, and she pointed to herself and said, "I Kate!" and kept putting her hand on her chest saying, "Kate Kate Kate." The friend commented on her being in the stage where she introduces herself, and I had to tell him he was the first! Then he asked where was Daddy, and Kate said, "Home." She had a conversation! All day long she spat out two and three word sentences like I have never heard her do before. I had been telling Joel all week that I thought she was going to explode in sentences this week, because her language acquisition rate had been exploding, and sure enough, today was the day. I am pretty sure she said at least ten new words today, and at least ten yesterday too. I can't keep up! I honestly don't know how many words she has said now, but I'd say it is in the neighborhood of 250.

She has also been expanding her use of labels. Instead of "book," she will label the book, like "puppy book," "cake book" or "train book." She says "mommy pants" or "daddy shoes." When she wants something, she will say "Kate blueberries" or "Kate smoothie." It is so exciting to see it unfold, and she seems utterly proud of herself. So are her proud parents! It really makes my day.

Digg!

Wow!! Harvard Class of 2019, here she comes!!
I guess this is good evidence of the confluence of Nature and Nurture. Keep her going and she will take over the world with charm and brains. Kate, can you say "Kate wants to go visit Grampus"?
