Natural Disposable Diaper Review

Isabel has had chronic diaper rash, so we have been experimenting with disposable diapers that are more skin-friendly than traditional diapers. We test drove Tushies Tender Care, Nature Babycare, and gDiapers. The good news is her diaper rash is much better, and we don't even need the Beaudreaux's butt paste! The results are in!
Tushies Tender Care
We tried the Tushies Tender Care diapers and were really pleased with the results.
I think these diapers work as well as Pampers, with the added benefit that they are latex-free, perfume-free, TBT-free, GMO-free and hypoallergenic. They survived 12 hours at night with no leaks, and the poop stayed in the diaper. What else could you want? They are large and roomy, the cover is soft and comfy, and the elastic stretches like a regular diaper. While they are hypoallergenic and good for the baby, I'm not sure they are as eco-friendly as they could be, which is their only downside. This was my personal favorite.
Nature Babycare
Nature Babycare placed second in our test drive. The diapers are soft and eco-friendly, and definitely worked well. They rarely leaked, although one night they didn't make the cut out of two weeks that we tried them. We also had a leaky poo diaper, which is why they didn't do quite as well as the Tushies. They run a bit small, and I had trouble fitting them on my daughter properly.
We ordered a size 3 for our 16 pound daughter, which is the bottom of their range for size 3. I had trouble fastening it around her waist. While they fit ok, I wouldn't see them fitting if she weighed an additional two pounds. The elastic waist is a little stiff, and since they are made out of paper, they feel a bit fragile, although we never had a tear. The one odd thing about them is that the tabs don't stick to the back of the diaper, so they won't make a little package to throw away (and contain the mess/smell). However, they did work well and I thought they were attractive and easy on her skin.
gDiapers
gDiapers came in third, simply because they don't live up to their promise. Not only are they a bit expensive, but they leak overnight and make awful messes with poopy diapers. While I love the fact that they biodegrade so quickly, and that the covers are comfy cotton, I didn't like the mess I had to clean up or they pain factor of changing a diaper. They are also rather bulky, which made it tough to fit clothes around her bum.
We bought a starter kit and a pack of refills to start, but quickly found we needed some additional cloth covers because we only do laundry once a week. They washed well and the velcro seems sturdy and soft. I am using them around the house, because they seem good for her skin and comfortable, but at night they leak so we use disposables. As for their flushability, given that our house is 150 years old, we didn't give it a go. However, I am sure they are more landfill friendly than a traditional diaper so we were fine with that.
